Just In From Rock Hill Renaissance Blog...Sullivan Renaissance 2012 Application Deadline Was Today at 5:00 PM

The deadline for the 2012 Sullivan Renaissance Beautification Grants Program was today at 5:00 PM.  Being involved with Sullivan Renaissance last year working with the MCDP here in Mountaindale was a very enriching experience for me, and though I will miss all the wonderful people I met on the trail while working on our award winning "Train Garden" last summer, am very excited at the prospect of working with the folks in Rock Hill.

Applications Are In For Sullivan Renaissance Projects, and Work Is Progressing On Roch Hill's Own 2012 Renaissance Project As Crews Renovate Former Tourist Center

The deadline for filing Sullivan Renaissance Applications for 2012 was today at 5:00 PM, and thanks to the hard work of Melinda and many others, Rock Hill's application was timely filed for this year...Rock Hill this year has decided to step up and do a far reaching and very large project as a category C participant, and for those driving through town recently, you have been watching a major part of this year's plan come to fruition thanks to generous support of Steven Gottlieb and the Gottlieb  family.

Sure you have noticed all the work crews, and activity kitty corner across the street from the Trading Post here in town as our former Visitor's Center undergoes a major transformation from crumbling derelict building into a beautiful pristine downtown Rock Hill showcase...special thanks to the contractors and electrician who are playing a crucial role, working with Steven Gottlieb, in this incredible  makeover that is just one part of this year's Rock Hill Sullivan Renaissance Project:

Diamond Starts To Sparkle

In brief discussions with the workers, with Gary Gottlieb, seems our old visitors center has quite a personal history, a history that we hope to share here in this blog...suffice it to say, that the structure has been moved numerous times (have heard a number as high as seven), and this is the building's second makeover at it's current location.  This makeover should assure that the little house that could will be around for at least another 100 years, as everything inside and out is in the process of receiving a full structural and cosmetic makeover.

Some highlights of this year's Rock Hill Sullivan Renaissance Application include:

1.  Moving our "Farmers Market" to this new location.

2.  Both renovation and enlargement of the Trading Post employee parking area at this site.

3.  Construction and installation of a beautiful Gazebo.

4.  New raised flower bed and signage for "Farmers Market".

Flowers, Flowers Everywhere...Sullivan Renaissance Annual Conference This SATURDAY!

Keynote Address to be Webcast Live at www.sullivanrenaissance.org 

[FERNDALE] – The CVI Center will be filled with flowers and garden exhibitors for the 2012 Sullivan Renaissance Annual Conference and Expo on Saturday, March 10 at the CVI Center in Ferndale.  The public is invited and there is no cost to attend. 

The keynote address will be delivered by Joe Lamp’l (aka Joe Gardener), host and executive producer of the award-winning series “Growing a Greener World” on public television, who will talk about gardening trends around the country.  The talk will also be available through a live webcast by going to www.sullivanrenaissance.org. 

A special feature of the conference is the introduction of the Renaissance Collection, a group of annuals and perennials that meet the challenges of gardening in Sullivan County.  These nine plants will be displayed at the expo, and the collection will be available at local nurseries and garden centers in the spring.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a light breakfast and the expo.  The program starts at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 2:00 p.m.  Door prizes will be awarded at the conference conclusion. 

The conference features exhibits and workshops on the Renaissance Collection, garden maintenance, recruiting volunteers, cultivating leaders, cultivating leaders, Main Street success stories, enhancing storefronts, and the Catskill Edible Garden Project.  Workshop space is limited to the first registrants, so please RSVP.

Recipients of the 17^th Annual Sullivan First Achievement Awards will be recognized at the conference, which will also outline the new 2012 Sullivan Renaissance grant program and have applications available.

DISCOUNTS FOR BEAUTIFICATION

Local Merchants Offer Discounts for Community Projects  

[MONTICELLO] – Local businesses can support community beautification projects throughout Sullivan County by joining the Merchant Discount Program organized by the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce and Sullivan Renaissance.

Now in its eleventh year, the program links volunteer Renaissance projects with businesses offering discounts on products and services used to clean up and beautify communities.

Sullivan Renaissance grants provide community groups with seed money for beautification and spruce up projects.  Grant amounts range from $200 to $5000 depending on the size of the project.  The discount program helps this money go farther, while encouraging local spending.

“Everyone wins with this program,” said Chamber President and CEO Terri Ward.  “Merchants get an increase in business; community groups are able to stretch their resources while keeping the dollars local; and Sullivan County looks more inviting to visitors and residents alike.”

Merchants set the savings amounts – typically 10% to 20% or more – and are given a list of participants.  Project leaders are given special cards to identify that the items they are purchasing will be used for community projects.  Stores are publicized in flyers, news releases and on the Sullivan Renaissance website [www.sullivanrenaissance.org].

Let Sullivan Renaissance Know What You’re Thinking for 2012

[FERNDALE] – As Sullivan Renaissance finalizes plans for 2012, it is asking groups and individuals now to describe the kind of projects they might like to do next year.

New groups should complete an “Expression of Interest” form which is available from Sullivan Renaissance. Filling out the form does not obligate an individual or organization to submit an application, nor does it guarantee funding. Groups that had projects in 2011 have already indicated their future plans when they completed their end-of-season survey.

The types of projects Sullivan Renaissance traditionally funds include:

• Beautification Grants

- Category A (single element projects)

- Category B (multiple element projects at one location

- Category C (multiple element projects at multiple locations)

- Maintenance grants for long-term projects

- Community development grants

• Seasonal Demonstration Grants
• Mini-grants for Beautification
• School and Youth Initiatives
• Technical Assistance Grants
• Environmental Initiatives

Groups that would like to explore possible projects or need assistance in planning are encouraged to call the Sullivan Renaissance office. Organizations that have not been part of the Sullivan Renaissance program in the past should contact us prior to submitting an application.
